US President Donald Trump announced that the FBI has returned boxes of classified documents seized from his Mar-a-Lago home during an investigation into his handling of sensitive materials. Trump claimed these documents, which he allegedly took from the White House, would eventually be displayed at his presidential library. He expressed his belief that he committed no wrongdoing and characterized the investigation as a political “witchhunt.” The FBI’s search in 2022 aimed to recover the classified documents, which were reportedly found unsecured in a bathroom. A special counsel had been handling the case before it was dropped when Trump regained power.
Washington, United States:
On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced that the FBI had returned boxes of classified documents that were seized from his Mar-a-Lago residence during an inquiry into alleged misconduct. He mentioned his intent to eventually showcase them at his presidential library.
Trump stated that the boxes included top-secret documents, for which he had faced allegations of improperly taking them when leaving the White House after his first term. He noted that the Justice Department, now led by his own appointees, had returned them.
“The department just returned the boxes that Deranged Jack Smith made such a fuss about,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform, referring to the special counsel overseeing the documents case.
“They are being brought down to Florida and will eventually be part of the Trump Presidential Library,” he added, without specifying whether all the documents originally included in the boxes had also been returned.
Trump reiterated his belief that he “did absolutely nothing wrong,” claiming that the case against him was a politically motivated witch hunt.
The FBI conducted a raid at Mar-a-Lago in 2022 to recover classified documents, which Smith accused Trump of hiding at the Florida golf club after leaving the White House the previous year.
Images revealed the top-secret documents—some containing Pentagon and CIA records—recklessly stored and unsecured in a well-furnished bathroom at the bustling club.
Trump had reportedly obstructed several attempts by the previous administration under Joe Biden to retrieve the documents.
The legal proceedings were ongoing when Trump reclaimed the presidency on January 20.
Nine days later, Smith dropped the case, citing a Justice Department policy against indicting or prosecuting a sitting president and subsequently resigned from the department.
