Former N.F.L. Player Detained for Protest Against MAGA Plaque

Chris Kluwe, a former N.F.L. punter residing in Huntington Beach, Calif., was arrested during a City Council meeting after he voiced his objections to plans for a plaque referencing President Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again.”

“While everyone supports a plaque to honor the library, an overwhelming majority oppose including a MAGA acrostic. Sadly, it’s evident that this council does not heed the public’s concerns. Therefore, I will take this opportunity to share what MAGA has represented over the past three weeks. MAGA embodies the erasure of trans individuals from society. MAGA signifies resegregation and racism. MAGA symbolizes censorship and book bans. MAGA involves the dismissal of air traffic controllers during airplane emergencies. MAGA entails the removal of those responsible for our nuclear arsenal. MAGA refers to the firing of military veterans and others serving them at the V.A., which includes the termination of veteran suicide research. MAGA signifies cuts to educational funding, including for children with disabilities. MAGA is deeply corrupt, unmistakably anti-democratic, and most importantly, MAGA is self-evidently a Nazi movement. A swastika may have been replaced with a red hat, but fundamentally, that is what it represents. I will now partake in the time-honored American practice of peaceful civil disobedience.” “Leave—get out.”
