DeepSeek, based in Hangzhou, has developed large language models that rival Western AI systems at lower costs, showcasing China’s tech advancement amid U.S. containment efforts. Its founder, Liang Wenfeng, has received significant recognition, and the company is set to unveil R2, a successor to the R1 model. Prominent brands like Haier, Hisense, and TCL will utilize DeepSeek’s AI for more sophisticated smart devices, enhancing functionalities such as responding to complex voice commands.
Beijing:
China’s enthusiastic adoption of DeepSeek has taken a significant leap, now encompassing televisions, refrigerators, and robotic vacuum cleaners, as numerous home appliance brands announce the integration of the startup’s artificial intelligence technologies into their products.
DeepSeek, based in Hangzhou, has disrupted the AI landscape this year with its advanced language models that rival Western alternatives in performance while being far more affordable. This achievement has instilled a sense of pride and joy in China, positioning DeepSeek as a testament to the failure of U.S. efforts to curb technological progress in China.
Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, has received accolades from Chinese officials, and reports indicate that the company is preparing to unveil R2, the next iteration following its R1 reasoning model.
In the last fortnight, home appliance manufacturers such as Haier, Hisense, and TCL Electronics have joined forces with automotive and tech giants like Huawei and Tencent in committing to the use of DeepSeek’s models.
Many of these household items are already equipped with smart technology that responds to voice commands. However, the incorporation of DeepSeek’s models will enhance their precision considerably.
According to Liu Xingliang, an independent industry analyst in Beijing, a robotic vacuum cleaner, for instance, could utilize the semantic parsing features of DeepSeek-R1 to navigate efficiently and dodge obstacles with increased agility and sophistication.
“The device will be capable of understanding intricate commands such as ‘Carefully wax the wooden floor in the master bedroom while avoiding the Legos’,” Liu explained.
