Bareilly:

A wedding in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, took a disastrous turn when the groom arrived intoxicated and mistakenly garlanded the bride’s best friend instead of the bride herself. Radha Devi, the 21-year-old bride, reacted by slapping the groom, calling off the wedding, and leaving the ceremony. However, that wasn’t the end of the unfolding drama on Saturday.

The incident began when the groom, Ravindra Kumar, aged 26, showed up late with his baraat or wedding procession. According to the FIR filed by the bride’s family, the groom’s family was demanding additional dowry. The bride’s father mentioned that he had already provided Rs 2.5 lakh during the pre-wedding customs and another Rs 2 lakh on the wedding day morning. However, this did not satisfy the groom’s family.

Another perspective suggests that Ravindra Kumar wanted to marry someone of his own choosing.

Allegedly arriving at the wedding intoxicated, he misbehaved with the bride’s family and guests.

By the time the garland exchange ritual took place, he had been drinking with his friends for some time, as stated in the FIR.

Instead of placing the garland around his bride’s neck, he mistakenly threw it at her best friend, who was standing nearby. An enraged Radha Devi immediately slapped the groom and stormed off.

A brawl broke out between both families, with chairs being hurled back and forth. Ultimately, the police intervened to take control of the situation. The groom and his wedding party were sent home.

The police detained the groom and his friends, filing a case for insulting the bride’s family and “disturbing the peace.”

Additionally, a case has been lodged against the groom for dowry demand.

Reports indicate that the groom’s friends provided him with prohibited alcohol, resulting in one arrest for selling the liquor.
