Buffalo Bills Eye $40 Million 5-Time Pro Bowler as Von Miller’s Replacement

The Buffalo Bills face a critical offseason decision regarding veteran edge rusher Von Miller, who may be a cut candidate due to a lackluster performance with just six sacks over the past two seasons and a hefty $23.8 million cap hit for 2025. Cutting him before June 1 could save $8.3 million in cap space. Alternatively, using a post-June 1 designation could save $17.4 million but delay access to funds. Should Miller be released, the Bills may pursue Joey Bosa, recently cut by the Chargers, as a younger, viable replacement. Bosa, while facing injury risks, could solve the Bills’ defensive needs at an affordable price.

A major offseason choice for the Buffalo Bills revolves around the future of veteran edge rusher Von Miller.

Miller is frequently viewed as a candidate for release this offseason. Over the last two seasons, he has tallied only six sacks, all accrued in 2024. Consequently, maintaining Miller on the roster becomes challenging with a hefty $23.8 million cap hit looming for 2025.

Parting ways with Miller before June 1 would free up $8.3 million in cap space for the Bills, a significant relief given they are currently $9.7 million over the cap. Alternatively, utilizing the post-June 1 designation would save $17.4 million, although that means the funds wouldn’t be accessible until that date.

Should the Bills decide to release Miller this offseason, Vinnie Iyer from the Sporting News suggests they might pursue Joey Bosa, released by the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday.

“Buffalo is another team that could be in the mix as the uncertainty of Von Miller’s future looms,” wrote Iyer. “The Bills might see the benefits of moving toward a younger player like Bosa and also provide an enticing chance to win, as they’ve been on the brink of success for several years. They could appeal to him as the game-changer needed to propel the team to the next level.”

Bosa recorded five sacks over 14 games with the Chargers last season, making him a suitable replacement for Miller. Additionally, he represents a multi-year option due to being five years younger.

However, the five-time Pro Bowler comes with some risk of injury, having missed a total of 23 games in the last three seasons.

Ultimately, the Bills’ potential pursuit of Bosa hinges on the outcome concerning Miller and the contract the former Charger demands.

If Buffalo can reshape Miller’s deal, his salary may align closely with what Bosa would command on the market, potentially leading the Bills to retain the 34-year-old rather than pursue Bosa.

Bosa is expected to secure a deal in the $10-$12 million range after a few challenging years, and the Bills might allocate most of that with the savings from releasing Miller.

If they do release Miller, pursuing Bosa would be a beneficial move. He could seamlessly fill Miller’s role and may address Buffalo’s long-term needs.
