Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, to pay a fine of 8.1 million reais ($1.42 million) for failing to comply with judicial orders. The ruling, made public on Thursday, follows X’s noncompliance with a court order to remove a profile spreading misinformation and to provide the user’s registration data. A daily fine of 100,000 reais was imposed for this failure, which also jeopardized the local legal representative’s liability. X faced previous suspension in Brazil for not adhering to court orders on hate speech and legal representation requirements.
The judgment from Moraes referenced X’s failure to comply with the order to submit the user’s data.
Brasilia:
Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Brazilian Supreme Court has mandated that X, the social media platform owned by billionaire Elon Musk, pay a fine of 8.1 million reais ($1.42 million) for failing to adhere to judicial orders, as stated in a ruling made public on Thursday.
This decision arises from a legal case last year where the court instructed X to remove a profile deemed to have propagated misinformation and also to provide user registration information. The lack of compliance resulted in a daily penalty of 100,000 reais and could subject the local legal representative of the social media company to criminal charges.
Moraes’s ruling highlighted X’s disregard for the order to furnish the user’s data and mandated that it promptly pay the penalty.
X’s legal team in Brazil opted not to provide any comments.
In 2024, X faced a temporary suspension in Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, for more than a month due to its noncompliance with court orders concerning hate speech moderation, as well as its failure to designate a legal representative in the country as legally required.
