Chandigarh:

Arjuna awardee and former world champion boxer Saweety Boora has filed a police complaint against her husband, Deepak Hooda, a kabaddi player who won a bronze medal in the Asiad, alleging that he and his family physically assaulted her for dowry demands.

The couple married in 2022. Ms. Boora has registered the complaint against Mr. Hooda, also an Arjuna awardee, in Hisar, Haryana.

“An FIR dated February 25 has been filed following the complaint by Saweety Boora against her husband, Deepak Hooda,” said Seema, the SHO of the women’s police station in Hisar, on Thursday.

When asked if Hooda has been given an opportunity to reply, the SHO stated, “We issued him notices 2-3 times, but he did not appear.” When PTI contacted Hooda, he attributed his absence to health issues stemming from the trauma, saying, “I have provided a medical certificate and requested a postponement. I will definitely visit the police station, but I will not speak negatively about my wife. I have not been permitted to see her,” he added.

Ms. Boora declined to comment when approached.

Regarding the allegations made against Mr. Hooda, the SHO mentioned that torture and assault “for additional dowry” are among the charges raised.

“A request for a luxury car was fulfilled, yet her husband reportedly physically assaults her and continues to demand money,” the SHO explained in reference to Ms. Boora’s claims.

A case has been filed under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, concerning cruelty inflicted by a husband or his relatives upon a woman.

Mr. Hooda previously ran unsuccessfully as the BJP candidate for the 2024 Haryana assembly elections from the Meham constituency in Rohtak district.

He was part of the Indian kabaddi team that secured a gold medal at the South Asian Games in 2016 and won a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games. Additionally, he has participated in the Pro Kabaddi League.
