Borussia Dortmund enhanced their top-four prospects with a 2-0 victory over St Pauli, thanks to goals from Serhou Guirassy and Karim Adeyemi, marking their first back-to-back wins this season. Guirassy scored five minutes into the second half, followed by Adeyemi’s impressive solo effort. Dortmund remains 10th, six points off fourth place. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig suffered a 2-1 defeat to Mainz, with Leipzig’s poor form continuing—just one win in eight games. Wolfsburg and Borussia Moenchengladbach also secured victories, while Bayer Leverkusen aimed to reduce the gap to league leaders Bayern Munich in their upcoming match.
Serhou Guirassy netted a goal as Borussia Dortmund strengthened their narrow chances of finishing in the top four with a 2-0 victory against St Pauli on Saturday. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig’s struggles continued with a home defeat to Mainz. Following a spectacular four-goal performance in a 6-0 rout of Union Berlin last week, Guirassy opened the scoring for Dortmund just five minutes into the second half, converting a pass from Karim Adeyemi. Adeyemi himself added a second goal for Dortmund eight minutes later with a brilliant solo effort. The 23-year-old, one of the smaller players on the field, seized on a long pass, fought off two defenders, and coolly placed the ball into the net.
This marks the first occasion this season that Dortmund has secured back-to-back league victories.
Dortmund, set to host Lille in the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday, currently sits in 10th place, six points away from the fourth position, with just 10 matches left to play.
Guirassy has scored 24 goals across all competitions for Dortmund since joining from Stuttgart in July, surpassing the total number of goals that St Pauli has achieved in the league throughout the entire season.
A “relieved” Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck commended his team’s “mature performance” in an interview with Sky Germany, stating, “We’ve been striving for a second consecutive victory all season long.”
In contrast, Leipzig squandered a one-goal advantage and fell 2-1 at home against Mainz, who moved up to fourth place.
Xavi Simons provided Leipzig with an ideal start, scoring from close range just one minute into the match.
Mainz turned the tide in six dramatic minutes in the second half.
Mainz, who barely escaped relegation last season, are on course for their first-ever participation in the Champions League.
Leipzig has won only one of their last eight league matches and risks missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time since 2017-18.
Meanwhile, Wolfsburg maintained their European qualification ambitions with a 2-1 victory at Werder Bremen, thanks to two goals from Patrick Wimmer.
Wolfsburg is currently in seventh place, just one point behind Leipzig, who hold the final Europa League qualification position.
A brace from Robin Hack and a goal from Nathan Ngoumou propelled Borussia Moenchengladbach to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Heidenheim, bringing them level with Wolfsburg, both on 37 points.
Heidenheim secured a vital win in their fight against relegation, edging out Bochum 1-0 with the only goal scored by Bayern Munich-bound Tom Bischof.
Later on Saturday, defending champions Bayer Leverkusen face Eintracht Frankfurt, aiming to reduce the gap to league leaders Bayern, who defeated Stuttgart away on Friday, to eight points.
Leverkusen will then meet Bayern in their Champions League last 16 clash, with the first leg scheduled in Munich on Wednesday.
