Android introduces features for digital credentials.

Google has announced that Android will support digital credential presentation and issuance through native integration of OpenID4VP and OpenID4VCI standards in its Credential Manager. Users can save digital credentials, like driver’s licenses and passports, in apps utilizing the DigitalCredential API, allowing seamless sharing across compatible apps. These transfers will occur over encrypted channels for security and privacy. Currently, this feature is supported by Google Wallet, with plans for integration in Samsung Wallet and 1Password. Digital credentials can also include various documents such as education certificates and insurance policies, promoting broader adoption of this technology.

Google has revealed that Android will now support the presentation and issuance of digital credentials. This enhancement involves native support for OpenID4VP and OpenID4VCI standards, which are being embedded within Android’s Credential Manager.

With this new feature, users will have the ability to store digital credentials on their devices within any app that utilizes the DigitalCredential API. These apps will also be able to exchange information with one another, allowing users to conveniently upload or present their credentials wherever needed. For security and privacy reasons, all transfers will be conducted over encrypted communication channels.

Digital credentials are cryptographically verifiable documents that can encompass various items such as a user’s driver’s license, passport, or national ID. They may also include educational certificates, insurance policies, memberships, permits, and more, should the technology see broader adoption. Typically, these can be provided and stored by standard wallet apps like Google Wallet, as well as airline apps that may wish to keep users’ miles reward programs.

Currently, this feature is supported by Google Wallet and will soon be available in Samsung Wallet and 1Password.
