Xiaomi to Launch YU7 Electric SUV on May 22

Xiaomi is set to unveil its first SUV, the YU7, on May 22 at 7 PM Beijing time, marking a significant advancement for its EV division as it aims to compete with the Tesla Model Y. Following the successful launch of the SU7 sedan, which debuted on March 28, 2024, Xiaomi has already delivered over 28,000 units in April. The YU7 is larger than the Tesla Model Y, boasting dimensions of 196.8 inches in length and a wheelbase of 118 inches. Despite facing challenges, including a tragic accident and reports of quality issues, Xiaomi continues to build a strong customer base. The launch event will also showcase other products, including a mobile SoC and new smartphones.

Xiaomi is set to officially reveal its inaugural SUV, the Xiaomi YU7. This highly awaited vehicle will make its debut this Thursday, May 22, during a special event commencing at 7 PM Beijing time. This marks a significant milestone for Xiaomi EV, positioning it to better compete against established competitors, particularly targeting rivals like the Tesla Model Y.

The YU7’s introduction follows the successful release of Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle, the SU7 sedan, last year. The SU7 entered the market on March 28, 2024, aiming to rival the likes of the Tesla Model 3. Xiaomi subsequently expanded the SU7 lineup with the SU7 Ultra, a high-performance model boasting an impressive 1,548 hp total output.

Despite being a relative newcomer, Xiaomi EV has demonstrated remarkable sales figures, delivering over 28,000 units in April alone—marking the seventh consecutive month with deliveries exceeding 20,000 units. Clearly, there is significant demand for Xiaomi’s electric vehicles, and the brand appears to be swiftly cultivating a loyal customer base.

Information about the YU7 first surfaced last December when Xiaomi EV revealed the vehicle’s name and its ambition to compete with the Tesla Model Y. Regulatory filings at that time provided insights into the SUV’s dimensions. The YU7 is reported to be 196.8 inches long, 78.6 inches wide, and 63 inches tall, with a substantial wheelbase of 118 inches. When comparing these measurements to the updated Tesla Model Y, which measures 188.6 inches in length, 78 inches in width, and 63.9 inches in height, with a 113.8 inches wheelbase, it is clear that the YU7 will be a larger SUV, offering more interior space.

The path has not been entirely smooth for Xiaomi EV. In recent months, the company encountered public scrutiny following a tragic SU7 accident in late March that resulted in three fatalities. Additionally, reports of quality concerns regarding the Xiaomi SU7 have circulated on Chinese social media. These factors seem to have influenced the recent sales figures, with data compiled for the week ending May 11 showing insurance registrations for Xiaomi EVs at 5,180 units—nearly 9% lower than the previous week’s 5,690 registrations, marking a third consecutive week of decline.

The forthcoming launch event for the YU7 is also significant for Xiaomi overall. In addition to the new electric SUV, the company will unveil several other products, including its first mobile system-on-a-chip (SoC), the Xring O1, the Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone, and the Xiaomi 7 Ultra tablet. This multi-product launch is part of Xiaomi’s strategy to unify its various technological initiatives and capitalize on its brand ecosystem.
