Jessica Simpson is refreshing her style!

The 43-year-old pop star flaunted newly dyed dirty blonde locks with sun-kissed highlights during her special appearance on the season 23 finale of American Idol on Sunday, May 18.

Simpson sought help from her longtime friend and celebrity colorist Rita Hazan for this color transformation, which Hazan describes as “more natural,” likening it to “a kid on the beach.”

Hazan refers to the hair color as “desert sunset blonde,” noting that the entire process took “two hours” to complete.

“A must-have in my kit for all my clients is Glaze’s Supergloss. We used the Vanilla Lights shade on Jessica — it’s her ideal match to minimize brassiness in her highlights,” she elaborates. “It provides a rich, shiny texture, and a sleek, polished look that revitalizes hair, making it appear healthier after just one use.”

Hazan mentions that Simpson “adored” her new hair color. “She was thrilled to try a fresh look,” the stylist shares. “Previously, she always had a very buttery blonde — this time we aimed for something youthful and different.”

Hazan notes that this new hairstyle is ideal for the “With You” singer, who is navigating her new chapter after her split from Eric Johnson earlier this year. (Simpson and the former NFL player, 45, have three children together: daughters Maxwell “Maxi” Drew and Birdie Mae, along with son Ace Knute.)

“It gives off a fresh and youthful vibe, combined with confidence and a hint of attitude to match her mood,” Hazan mentions to PEOPLE, adding, “Our long history together builds immense personal and professional trust.”

“I typically fly in from New York, and we enjoy a fun hair session in her bathroom with a few of the same friends every six weeks,” she continues. “Initially, we catch up on life briefly and then share lots of laughter and personal anecdotes from the past month. It’s always delightful; I can’t recall a single visit without hearty laughter.”

Recently, Simpson — who has just launched her EP Nashville Canyon — discussed her latest collection for Walmart, inspired by her country roots, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.

“For me, style grows alongside my personal evolution throughout different phases of life,” said the designer. “That’s the essence of my music right now … Nashville Canyon embodies the evolution of past, present, and future, along with versatility, femininity, openness, and confidence.”

Simpson mentioned that she abides by “no rules” when it comes to fashion inspiration.

“I draw from everything, whether it’s a vintage wallpaper design in a film I watch or an artistic piece in an old documentary,” she stated. “Those who know me understand I observe everything. Inspiration strikes me in deeply impactful ways every single day. Honestly, I can’t imagine living without Pinterest.”

Lately, the artist has been experimenting with her appearances. In March, Simpson shared videos on TikTok and Instagram displaying a trendy airport outfit in Austin, Texas, where she performed for the first time in 15 years at the Recording Academy’s Austin Chapter Block Party during the South by Southwest festival.

In her video, the fashion designer donned an opulent Maison Common faux shearling coat priced at $2,350, which quickly sold out, over what seemed to be a leopard-print jumpsuit paired with high-heeled latex boots. She accessorized with oversized aviator sunglasses and a prominent cross necklace.

That same month, Simpson made a surprise appearance at the annual Luck Reunion festival in Texas, showcasing an animal-themed outfit.

During her performance at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch in Spicewood, Simpson wore a leopard-print dress adorned with layers of turquoise jewelry, topped with a cropped crochet lace bolero.

Her accessories featured a large silver belt embellished with turquoise stones, which coordinated with her similarly styled earrings and necklace. She also showcased an array of silver jewelry on her wrists and fingers throughout the event, topped off with some flashy nail art.

Simpson’s recent appearance on American Idol is just another highlight in a series of musical outings for the star, who has been busy since she released her pop-country rock track “Use My Heart Against Me” in February, marking her return to original music after several years.

“Writing this song felt quite sensual,” Simpson exclusively shared with PEOPLE about the track featured on Nashville Canyon earlier this year.

“I woke up one day with that lyric in mind,” she shared. “It’s about yearning for someone again, feeling indifferent if your heart gets used against you – even if it’s just for a fleeting moment. Just let it be, just for the experience again.”
