Liam Lawson has rejoined Racing Bulls after a brief stint with the main Red Bull Formula 1 team, where he was demoted following two races. Team boss Peter Bayer commented on Lawson’s return, noting that he initially appeared sad and puzzled but has quickly regained his confidence. Despite yet to score points this season, Lawson is adapting back to his familiar environment, supported by his knowledge of the team and its set-up. Bayer expressed optimism about Lawson’s racing potential, highlighting his great humor and racing skills as he transitions back into his role with Racing Bulls.
Liam Lawson has bounced back after being dropped by Red Bull in March, and Racing Bulls team principal Peter Bayer remarked on Friday that he is regaining his form.
The New Zealand driver was elevated to the main Red Bull Formula 1 team following the separation from the underperforming Sergio Pérez but competed in only two races before being sent back to sister team Racing Bulls in exchange for Yuki Tsunoda.
Despite the 23-year-old not scoring any points in his first four races of the season, while his French rookie teammate Isack Hadjar has managed to get on the scoreboard, Bayer remained optimistic at the Saudi Grand Prix.
“I believe it took some time for him to process everything,” the Austrian commented regarding Lawson’s adjustment upon rejoining the Faenza-based team.
“The first time I saw him when he arrived in Italy, he seemed a bit down. Honestly, that’s how I felt about it. He looked a bit confused by the rapid changes.
“However, he was also familiar with the people, the tools, and the setup.
“I genuinely sensed that he quickly started to revert to his former self. He is a fantastic racer, someone with a great sense of humor, and that’s what we’re seeing in him again.”
