Huawei and SAIC unveil collaborative electric vehicle brand Shangjie

Huawei has launched a new automotive brand, Shangjie, in partnership with SAIC Motor, following a recent formal agreement. Richard Yu, a Huawei executive, announced that Shangjie’s first electric vehicle will debut this fall, marking it as the fifth brand under Huawei’s HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance), joining others like Aito and Luxeed. An initial investment of RMB 6 billion (approx. $820 million) has been allocated, with over 5,000 staff dedicated to the project. Shangjie will emphasize stylish design and advanced technology, targeting younger buyers with a starting price around RMB 150,000 ($20,400) for its first model.

Tech powerhouse Huawei has officially launched another automotive brand, Shangjie. This initiative is a collaboration with SAIC Motor, a leading Chinese car manufacturer, with the two firms having formalized their partnership two months ago.

Richard Yu, a senior executive at Huawei, presented the Shangjie brand during an event that highlighted Huawei’s HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) business. He announced that the inaugural electric vehicle under the Shangjie brand is set to make its debut this fall. Shangjie is now the fifth automotive brand operating beneath the HIMA umbrella, alongside Aito from Seres Group, Luxeed from Chery, Stelato from BAIC Group, and Maextro from JAC.

SAIC’s president, Jia Jianxu, disclosed that Shangjie will kick off with an investment of RMB 6 billion, approximately $820 million, employing a dedicated team of more than 5,000 individuals to develop this new brand. Mr. Jia also mentioned that Shangjie will utilize SAIC’s latest production lines and will eventually establish its own dedicated factory.

According to Mr. Jia, Shangjie will prioritize stylish design, cutting-edge technology, and a superior driving experience for its clientele. SAIC and Huawei initially entered a comprehensive cooperation agreement on February 21 in Shanghai, where SAIC headquarters is located. Their collaboration will encompass numerous facets of vehicle development, from design and manufacturing to parts sourcing and sales and service operations.

While neither company has provided exact details regarding the first Shangjie model, earlier reports from local media suggest that it will target a younger demographic. These reports also indicated that the initial model’s starting price would be around RMB 150,000 ($20,400), making it the most affordable electric vehicle within the HIMA framework.

Local sources indicate that all Shangjie models will be sold through HIMA’s established sales networks. Additionally, reports suggest that the first Shangjie EV will be based on SAIC’s Roewe new vehicle, known internally as the “ES39.”
