LOS ANGELES — — Mookie Betts launched a two-run homer, Shohei Ohtani also went yard, and the Los Angeles Dodgers triumphed over the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Monday night, handing the struggling Rockies their fourth consecutive defeat, the worst in the majors.
The Rockies have now lost six out of their last seven games, but they managed to score for the first time since last Thursday with Kyle Farmer’s RBI double in the sixth inning. They suffered a tough weekend with three losses against San Diego, getting outscored 16-0, and currently have just three victories while dropping nine of their last ten games on the road.
Dustin May (1-1) secured his first win since May 6, 2023, giving up one run and three hits over six innings. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk. Tanner Scott closed out the game in the ninth for his fifth save.
Betts’ fourth home run of the season opened the scoring with a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ohtani answered with his fifth homer in the fifth, sending a 408-foot blast to center field. Will Smith contributed with an RBI single in the fifth, followed by a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.
Colorado managed to narrow the gap to 5-3 in the seventh inning thanks to Hunter Goodman’s two-run homer off Anthony Banda.
Antonio Senzatela (0-3) allowed four runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.
The Dodgers’ top batters led the offensive charge. Ohtani, Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Smith combined for a stellar 9 for 17 performance, contributing five runs, five RBIs, and one walk. The team only recorded three strikeouts throughout the game.
In the eighth inning, Dodgers reliever Kirby Yates faced a challenging situation with the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base after Farmer hit a double and Ryan McMahon drew a walk. In the ninth, Scott dealt with runners on the corners before claiming the final two outs.
