Google introduces Photos integration for Gemini

The AI assistant Gemini integrates various Google apps, including Calendar, Drive, Docs, and YouTube, along with Spotify, OpenStax, WhatsApp, and Photos on Android. Its new app version adds features allowing users to search backed-up images by faces, locations, and dates, with prompts like “show recent selfies.” Another data-driven feature asks questions such as “where did I eat vegan food in Lisbon?” Users can tap results to open the Photos app for more details. Google Photos integration can be enabled through Gemini’s Android app, although the rollout is currently limited to the US.

The Gemini AI assistant facilitates the integration of a variety of Google applications, such as Calendar, Drive, Docs, Maps, YouTube, and more. The Android version is also compatible with Spotify, OpenStax, WhatsApp, and Photos.

The updated version of the app was showcased last month, and 9to5Google has confirmed that it is now being rolled out to devices. It introduces two new features: the first one enables the assistant to browse through backed-up images to search for faces, locations, and dates. It also provides response-specific suggestions, such as “show recent selfies” or “find photos of landscapes.”

The second feature requires more data, prompting questions like “where did I eat vegan food in Lisbon?” and “what was the driver’s license number of the Ferrari I saw in Bergamo?” Selecting a result will launch the Photos app, along with a “Show more” button for additional information.

To enable Google Photos through the Gemini Android app, navigate to the Profile Menu at the top-right corner, locate Apps, scroll to Media, and activate Google Photos. It should appear next to Spotify and YouTube; however, the rollout is gradual and currently available only in the US.
