US President Donald Trump has extended TikTok’s deadline to sell its US operations by another 75 days, pushing back a potential ban. He announced this update on Truth Social, citing ongoing efforts to finalize a deal and significant but incomplete progress. Trump emphasized the need for more work to secure necessary approvals and expressed a desire to collaborate with China. Despite interest from various companies, including Amazon, no agreement has yet met the expectations of the US administration, TikTok’s owner ByteDance, or the Chinese government. Trump reiterated his intention for TikTok not to “go dark.”
The deadline for TikTok to either sell its US operations or face a ban was set for tomorrow, but today, US President Donald Trump announced a 75-day extension for the app.
In a message on Truth Social, Trump indicated that his administration has been “working very hard on a deal to save TikTok” and claims to have “made tremendous progress”—though it appears that additional time is required for a satisfactory agreement.
It seems that the deal “requires further work to ensure that all necessary approvals are obtained,” and Trump aims to keep “working in good faith with China” on this matter. He reiterated his desire for TikTok to “not go dark.”
Numerous groups and companies have shown interest in acquiring TikTok’s US operations, with Amazon being the latest contender; however, none have yet come to an agreement that meets the expectations of the US government, ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company), and the Chinese authorities.
