While iPhones currently lack 8K video recording, reports suggest that the upcoming iPhone 17 may finally incorporate this feature. Presently, iPhone 16 models can record 4K videos at varying frame rates, but technical limitations with the Pro and Pro Max’s telephoto sensor have hindered 8K capabilities. The current 12MP sensor falls short of the 35MP required for 8K recording, causing potential confusion during video capture if switching between cameras. In contrast, Android devices frequently support higher resolutions for each camera. If the iPhone 17 supports 8K, an upgrade to the telephoto sensor is anticipated.
In contrast to Android devices, iPhones have not yet launched 8K video recording capabilities. Although the iPhone 16 series had potential for high-resolution video recording, Apple hasn’t truly implemented it. Now, a well-regarded tipster known for accurate Apple leaks suggests that the upcoming iPhone 17 will finally support 8K video capture.
Currently, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus allow for 4K video recording at up to 60fps, while the Pro and Pro Max models can achieve up to 120fps. Internal reports suggest that Apple was prepared to enable 8K video recording with the existing iPhone 16 models, but the telephoto sensor in the Pro and Pro Max units proved to be a limitation.
Capturing 8K video necessitates a camera sensor with a resolution around 35MP, whereas the iPhone’s sensor is merely 12MP. Apple has indicated that it would create confusion if the telephoto unit couldn’t record 8K, preventing seamless switching between cameras during such recordings.
In contrast, Android manufacturers tend to provide the maximum possible recording resolution for each camera sensor on their devices.
If the iPhone 17 series is indeed set to support 8K video recording, it indicates that Apple is planning to enhance the telephoto sensor to a higher resolution.
