Apple is exploring the integration of cameras into its Apple Watch series to enhance visual intelligence features, allowing the watches to interact more effectively with their surroundings. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the standard Apple Watch may feature a camera embedded in the display, while the Watch Ultra would position its sensor alongside the crown and power button. This capability aligns with functionalities found in the iPhone 16 series running iOS 18.2. The new camera-equipped Apple Watches are projected to launch by 2027. Additionally, Apple is reportedly testing AirPods with built-in cameras that could also feature visual intelligence.

Visual intelligence enables users and their devices to engage with their surroundings through AI. This feature has already been integrated into the iPhone 16 series operating on iOS 18.2 or newer, offering similar functionalities to Google’s Lens, which has been around for several years.

Both the Apple Watch and Watch Ultra are anticipated to feature cameras, with the standard variant incorporating the module within the display, while the Ultra will reportedly position its sensor on the side near the crown and power button. Gurman notes that these camera-equipped Apple Watches might debut by 2027.
An Apple Watch featuring cameras isn’t the only wearable under development in Cupertino; a recent report indicates that Apple is also experimenting with AirPods that include built-in cameras, which will similarly be enhanced with visual intelligence.
