Google has released the third beta of Android 16, marking the Platform Stability milestone. Only one more beta is expected in April to address bugs before the final version launches for supported Pixels by the end of June. This year introduces a new release approach for Android versions. The Beta 3 includes Auracast broadcast audio support for LE Audio hearing aids and improved text legibility for users with low vision. It also offers preliminary Local Network Protection, allowing users more control over app access to local devices. Google aims to extend Android 16 to as many devices as possible.
As anticipated, Google has officially unveiled the third beta of Android 16. This update marks the achievement of the Platform Stability milestone, and it is expected that there will be just one more beta release aimed at addressing bugs and resolving lingering concerns. This final beta is projected to be released in April, according to Google’s timeline shown below.
The official launch of Android 16 is anticipated for Google’s supported Pixel devices in the second quarter of the year, specifically by the end of June. Following that, a minor Android update is expected in the fourth quarter, between October and December. This marks a significant shift in how Google has traditionally rolled out new Android versions in recent years.
The Android 16 Beta 3 introduces Auracast broadcast audio support for compatible LE Audio hearing aids, along with an outline text feature designed for users with low vision, replacing the high contrast text functionality. This adjustment enhances the contrast area surrounding the text to “significantly enhance legibility”.
Additionally, there is early support for Local Network Protection, a feature that is “intended for a future major release of Android,” which will provide users with more control over which apps can connect to devices on their local network. Currently, this feature is available only as an opt-in option for app developers.
Google has stated that it is “devoting additional resources” to collaborate with its device partners to extend Android 16 “to as many devices as possible”.
