OnePlus CEO Pete Lau announced the removal of the alert slider from future devices in response to user feedback requesting a customizable version. The company plans to replace it with a smarter, customizable button that retains the ability to switch sound profiles quickly while adding new features. The alert slider has been part of OnePlus flagships since the OnePlus 2 in 2015, except for the 2022 OnePlus 10T. Rumors suggest that this new button, potentially called the “Rubik’s Cube key,” will first appear on the Oppo Find X8 Ultra and later on the OnePlus 14.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has shared an extensive community post explaining the brand’s decision to eliminate the alert slider from future devices. This change follows consistent feedback from users expressing a desire for a customizable Alert Slider.
Lau clarified that OnePlus aims to evolve towards a more advanced “smarter, customizable button.” He mentioned that this new button will maintain the same core functionality, allowing users to swiftly switch between sound profiles, while also providing enhanced features.
The alert slider has been a staple of every OnePlus flagship since the OnePlus 2, launched in 2015. The only exception was the OnePlus 10T in 2022, which omitted it, but following consumer feedback, the brand reinstated it a year later.
Recent rumors suggest that OnePlus and its parent company Oppo will introduce a customizable smart button in their forthcoming flagship devices, potentially named the “Rubik’s Cube key.” This new button is anticipated to debut on the Oppo Find X8 Ultra before being incorporated into the OnePlus 14.
