On International Women’s Day, Indian Navy Honors Two Female Officers Completing a Global Voyage

On International Women’s Day 2025, the Indian Navy highlighted the voyage of two female officers, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A, sailing aboard the INSV Tarini. They began their circumnavigation mission on October 2, 2024, covering approximately 21,600 nautical miles across four continents and three oceans, expected to conclude by May 2025. Their journey symbolizes “Nari Shakti,” showcasing women’s resilience and capabilities in challenging maritime conditions. The officers have faced significant challenges, including storms and cyclones, and are committed to inspiring women in India to pursue their dreams and break barriers in historical achievements.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, the Indian Navy released a video highlighting the adventure of two women officers currently navigating the South Atlantic Ocean on the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini. Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A set sail on a challenging mission to circumnavigate the globe on October 2, 2024. The expedition is expected to span approximately 21,600 nautical miles (40,000 km) over eight months, traversing four continents, three oceans, and three formidable capes. The officers anticipate returning by May 2025.

To honor International Women’s Day, the Indian Navy shared moments from their journey and praised both female officers for their bravery and steadfast determination. “Their daring expedition, which involves the significant challenge of sailing the world, stands as a powerful emblem of Nari Shakti,” the Indian Navy posted on Instagram.

“With unwavering determination, a composed attitude, and thorough planning during extended periods of harsh maritime conditions while navigating thousands of nautical miles, they showcase the extraordinary capabilities of women today,” it further stated.

The footage showcases both officers as proud symbols of women’s empowerment enduring challenges during their voyage. “They confront the tides, navigate through storms, and demonstrate that the ocean, just like the world, imposes no limits on their bravery,” the Indian Navy stated.

“Having faced storms and endured rough seas, these officers carry the aspirations of the entire nation with them. As the world looks on with admiration, they epitomize the true essence of womanhood and illustrate the remarkable heights women can reach. Through their daring endeavor, Dilna and Roopa will continue to inspire countless #Indian women aiming to leave their mark in history,” the caption concluded.

Importantly, the Navika Sagar Parikrama II initiative reflects the Indian Navy’s dedication to “gender empowerment and maritime excellence.” It aims to highlight women’s strength on a global platform and alter perceptions regarding their role in demanding endeavors.

So far, the two officers have successfully completed the third phase and reached Port Stanley. As per the press release from the Ministry of Defence, they encountered three cyclones during this phase while sailing through Point Nemo, the ocean’s most isolated location. They also navigated the perilous waters of Drake Passage before rounding Cape Horn.
