KL Rahul Embraces His New Position as a Number 6 Batter, Says Coach Sitanshu Kotak

KL Rahul’s move to No. 6 has been thoroughly analyzed, with India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak noting that Rahul has embraced the role, enhancing the batting lineup’s depth. Despite having excelled at No. 5, Rahul has adapted well to his new position, as evidenced by his unbeaten 42 against Australia in the Champions Trophy semifinal. Kotak emphasized Rahul’s versatility, stating he can bat at various positions and is happy fulfilling team needs. He also highlighted the calm environment in the dressing room, where experienced players share insights, fostering a valuable learning atmosphere for younger teammates before crucial matches.

KL Rahul’s shift to the No. 6 batting position has been thoroughly analyzed, yet India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak noted that the wicketkeeper-batter has embraced this new role with enthusiasm, contributing significantly to the batting depth. Rahul has had remarkable success as a No. 5 batter, amassing over 1,000 runs with an average exceeding 50. However, since the ODI series against Sri Lanka last year, he has been batting in a lower position. Nonetheless, Rahul has demonstrated his ability to adjust to this relatively new slot, as evidenced by his unbeaten 42 runs against Australia in the Champions Trophy semifinal.

Teaming up with Hardik Pandya, the right-hander quickly contributed 34 runs, effectively sealing Australia’s fate.

Kotak emphasized Rahul’s adaptability, noting that he arrived nearly an hour early for the planned net session.

“He is capable of opening, batting at 4 or 5, and now fulfilling the demands of No. 6. He adapts well, and he is quite satisfied with the role he is playing,” Kotak stated.

The former Saurashtra player mentioned that having a reliable batsman at No. 6 has benefited the team significantly.

“When he performs well in that position, it obviously aids him too, as it presents a unique situation. This is obviously great for the team.”

“As far as my conversations with him go, he is willing to do whatever the team needs, and he has been consistently delivering,” he added.

Kotak mentioned there is no excessive pressure on India leading up to the final, as the senior players, who are accustomed to such high-stakes situations, have been instrumental in maintaining a calm atmosphere within the dressing room prior to the decisive day.

“The senior players and the younger ones are all conversing. That is invaluable. Rohit, Virat, Hardik, along with Shami and Jadeja, are sharing their insights, bringing 15-20 years of experience to the table.

“They are engaging with players who have only been playing for two or three years. Some knowledge can only be gained through experience. However, listening to those who have gone through this for 20 years creates a wonderful environment,” he added.
