Omaha Public Power District Service Interruptions in Nebraska and Iowa

Severe storms have caused widespread power outages in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, leaving around 8,400 OPPD customers without power, primarily in Omaha and surrounding areas. In Iowa, over 27,900 customers are affected, with significant outages also reported in the Des Moines and Council Bluffs areas. The blizzard conditions have prompted a blizzard warning for Omaha lasting until early Wednesday, with temperatures dropping below freezing and strong winds complicating recovery efforts. Visibility remains low due to blowing snow, and travel conditions are expected to be hazardous into the morning, despite some improvements in visibility.

FROM OMAHA’S WEATHER LEADER. I’M CHIEF METEOROLOGIST BILL RANDBY. REPORTING LIVE FROM THE SUPER DOPPLER STORM CENTER. THIS IS THE OPPD POWER OUTAGE MAP. CURRENTLY, 8,400 CUSTOMERS ARE WITHOUT POWER IN THE OPPD SERVICE AREA, PRIMARILY AROUND OMAHA, INCLUDING MIDTOWN, DOWNTOWN, AND INTO BELLEVUE. ADDITIONALLY, THE TOTAL NUMBER OF POWER OUTAGES REPORTED BY OPPD IS 8,497. THE ISSUE AT HAND IS THAT TEMPERATURES HAVE DROPPED BELOW FREEZING AND CONTINUE TO FALL OVERNIGHT. HOPEFULLY, POWER WILL BE RESTORED SOON. IN WESTERN IOWA, MID-AMERICAN ENERGY REPORTS NEARLY 4,000 CUSTOMERS WITHOUT POWER, AFFECTING PORTIONS OF POTTAWATTAMIE, HARRISON, AND MILLS COUNTIES DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND SNOW. VISIBILITIES AT OMAHA’S EPPLEY AIRFIELD ARE IMPROVING SOMEWHAT, ALTHOUGH MANY LATE FLIGHTS HAVE BEEN DELAYED UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING, DUE TO THE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS THIS EVENING. SNOWFALL HAS SLOWED, BUT IT IS STILL 28 DEGREES FEELING LIKE 10 WITH A NORTH WIND AT 40 MILES PER HOUR. A HEAVY BAND OF SNOW REMAINS ABOUT 20 MILES EAST OF OMAHA, SPREADING THROUGH CENTRAL POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY INTO MILLS COUNTY. FLURRIES AND LIGHT SNOW CONTINUE IN EASTERN NEBRASKA, WITH VISIBILITY AT EPPLEY REPORTED AT HALF A MILE, WHILE OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE REPORTS THREE MILES. THE BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 A.M., BUT THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY HAS BEEN LIFTED FOR NORFOLK AND COLUMBUS. SNOW IS FALLING IN THAT AREA. A HIGH WIND WARNING CONTINUES UNTIL NOON ON WEDNESDAY. WE EXPECT A TOTAL OF 3 TO 4 INCHES AROUND OMAHA, WITH SOME AREAS NEAR ATLANTIC AND CARROLL IN IOWA RECEIVING AS MUCH AS 5 TO 6 INCHES. WINDS ARE STILL GUSTING UP TO 59 MILES PER HOUR IN OMAHA AND 55 IN TEKAMAH, WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE 20S. THE BACK EDGE OF THE SNOW IS LOCATED IN IOWA, WITH INCREASING INTENSITY IN THE DARKER BLUE AREAS. AS WITH ALL THIS, BLOWING SNOW AND FLURRIES WILL PERSIST IN THE OMAHA METRO FOR A BIT LONGER, AND OUR 12-HOUR FORECAST PROJECTS TEMPERATURES DROPPING INTO THE LOW TO MID 20S BY MORNING. WEDNESDAY WILL BRING SUNSHINE, BUT SIGNIFICANT TRAVEL ISSUES ARE EXPECTED IN THE MORNING. WE’LL RETURN TO THE END OF JIMMY KIMMEL AFTER THIS.
