A hilarious and somewhat absurd conversation between an Indian woman and a South Korean taxi driver is making waves on social media, going viral for a rather unbelievable reason.
In an Instagram video, fashion and beauty influencer Piyusha Patil jokingly noted that the “taxi ajusshi (uncle) in Korea” always posed peculiar questions. She commented that she frequently had the “wildest conversations” in taxis and decided to document this particular exchange.
The video opens with the cab driver asking Ms. Patil in Korean about her origins. She replied that she was from India, to which the driver responded that he had no idea where that was. Ms. Patil donned her geography teacher hat and explained that India is near China and Pakistan.
The cab driver attempted to correct her by suggesting, “Indonesia?” Ms. Patil chuckled at his answer and clarified, “No, India or Indo.”
He seemed skeptical about India’s existence and continued probing, “There is something called India. What is the population?”
Ms. Patil shared that India holds the title of the world’s most populous country, which caught the driver off guard. “Even more than China,” she added, causing him to react in astonishment.
The driver replied, “China has 1.3 billion people,” but she highlighted that India’s population is approximately 1.4 billion.
For the first time coming to realization, he said in Korean, “Then it must be India,” finally grasping which country Ms. Patil was talking about.
He then inquired why she was in South Korea and whether she attended an Indian or Chinese university.
Ms. Patil explained that she was in Korea to study at Ewha Womans University, prompting the driver to excitedly exclaim, “Wow best” in Korean.
Many Instagram users found the video to be funny, though some expressed confusion about the cab driver’s innocent responses.
One commenter wrote, “All the K-dramas I’ve watched make understanding everything so much easier! Hilarious convo, I know you wanted to escape the scene!”
“Was he pretending, or did he genuinely not know about India? It’s hard to believe,” questioned another user.
Another added, “I often find myself in similar situations in India. Guess what, I’m Indian. So let’s give the old guy a break. He’s just curious, you know.”
Previously, an Indian content creator shared a video of a Korean man effortlessly speaking Hindi with a Bihari accent. The Korean man was touring Patna, and viewers were astonished by his flawless accent.
