“Having Observed the Proposal…”: Steve Smith Enters India’s ‘Home Ground Advantage’ Debate Before CT 2025 Semi-Final

Australia captain Steve Smith emphasized the importance of effectively countering Indian spinners on a dry Dubai pitch during the Champions Trophy semifinal. India showcased their spin proficiency by defeating New Zealand with four spinners in their last group match. Smith acknowledged the challenge posed by India’s spin attack and expressed confidence in opener Travis Head’s ability to perform under pressure. He noted their preparation for the pitch and highlighted the team’s available spin options despite missing key bowlers like Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. Smith remains optimistic for a strong performance leading to a potential final appearance.

Australia’s captain, Steve Smith, suggested that spinners will play a bigger role on a dry pitch in Dubai, emphasizing that his team’s success in the Champions Trophy semifinal against India on Tuesday hinges on how they handle the Indian slow bowlers. In their final Group A match on Sunday, India utilized four spinners against New Zealand, effectively stifling a solid Kiwi batting lineup to secure a 44-run victory. Smith commented on Monday, the day before the critical match with India, “I believe it’s not just Chakravarthy; their other spinners are also of high quality. For us, the game will likely come down to how we handle their spin. It’s certainly going to be a challenge.”

“I anticipate some spin will be evident, and we need to address that. We’ll determine how to approach it tomorrow. We have multiple strategies we can employ,” he added.

In light of this, Smith expressed hope that opener Travis Head, who has had notable performances against India in past knockout matches, will once again deliver against a formidable opponent.

“Every big game brings its own pressure. However, Travis has consistently risen to the occasion in these scenarios. He looked in excellent form the other night against Afghanistan.

“I’m confident he will aim to play with the same intent and aggression that he’s shown over time. If he can succeed during the power play, it would yield positive results.” Smith also mentioned that their training sessions in Dubai should help them prepare for a strong Indian side that has played all its matches on this ground.

“India has obviously played all their games here, so they have a better understanding of how the pitch behaves. I’m not certain if this provides them with an advantage. The entire square block is fairly dry, as we have observed how the wickets have played.”

Australia reached Dubai after their last league match against Afghanistan was rained out and awaited the outcome of India’s match against New Zealand to confirm their semifinal location.

Smith considered this situation a blessing in disguise. “Being here with a couple of days to prepare is ideal. Had we waited for last night’s result, we would have had to travel here today and play tomorrow, with no time for training on this surface and acclimating to the conditions at the academy,” he explained.

The New South Welshman also expressed optimism regarding their spin options.

“We have a variety of choices available. Maxwell is in the squad, although (Matthew) Short is unfortunately out. That’s a bit disappointing as he has been bowling well and performed admirably in the last game.

“We also have Cooper Connolly should we choose to utilize him. We possess several part-time options that could certainly contribute, along with a couple of frontline bowlers,” Smith stated.

The 35-year-old batsman remarked that while the absence of experienced players like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood is felt, the replacements have performed admirably up to this point.

“We are missing some frontline bowlers who have proven themselves over time. Nevertheless, we have players here who have been performing well. It’s a great opportunity for them to gain experience in an international tournament.

“I believe they’ve managed to hold their own impressively. Hopefully, we’ll see another strong performance from the guys tomorrow, enabling us to reach another final,” he added.
