Moreover, the service provides parents and guardians the ability to oversee the rides and limit the number of trips their teenager can book.
Uber for Teens Launching in India
On Monday, Gadgets 360 team members discovered the Uber for Teens feature within the ride-hailing app. It is accessible from the account page in the Uber app, allowing parents and guardians to invite their teenagers and enable them to use the app on their own devices.
As reported by TechCrunch, the company has started a pilot program in India, launching in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, and Mumbai. Uber mentioned that it aims to extend the Uber for Teens service to 35 cities shortly, including Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, and others.
The service enables users to invite their teenagers by inputting their contact information. After a teenager accepts the invitation, a specialized account will be created for them. These teen accounts are infused with additional safety features, and parents and guardians have enhanced monitoring capabilities.
Both guardians and teenagers can book rides using Uber for Teens. In India, guardians must link a credit or debit card to their account before they can invite a teenager to join their family account. However, once set up, the teenager can opt for any payment method they prefer. Uber also allows guardians to set limits on the total number of trips a teenager can book each month.
On a support page, the company specifies that teenagers will always be paired with skilled and highly-rated drivers who have passed background checks. Guardians can track their teenagers’ whereabouts once a ride begins and are able to access audio recordings of interactions between the driver and the teenager, provided those occurred through an Uber call.
Teen trips are destination-specific and cannot be altered by the drivers. These accounts also come with various inherently enabled safety features such as PIN verification and RideCheck.
In its financial report for Q4 2024, Uber confirmed that Uber for Teens is currently operational in almost 50 countries, having first made its debut in the US in 2023.
