Xiaomi Launches Innovative Modular Optical System at MWC 2025

Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and standard Xiaomi 15 on March 11 globally, ahead of MWC 2025. The Pro variant will not be available worldwide. The company unveiled a new imaging technology, the Xiaomi Modular Optical System, which features a customizable external lens for DSLR-quality images. This system, still in concept stage, utilizes a magnetic attachment and includes a 100-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor and 35mm lens, enhancing low-light performance. Both Xiaomi 15 models are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and run on Android 15-based HyperOS 2, offering advanced camera capabilities and fast charging options.

Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi 15 Ultra together with the standard Xiaomi 15 model in global markets on Sunday, just ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2025). The official launch in India is scheduled for March 11. The base variant was previously revealed in China alongside a Pro variant, which will not be available globally. Additionally, the company showcased a cutting-edge imaging technology known as the Xiaomi Modular Optical System. This system features a custom external lens that enables users to take DSLR-quality photographs.

Xiaomi Modular Optical System

The company unveiled the Xiaomi Modular Optical System during MWC 2025. Currently, this technology remains in the concept phase and is not yet available to consumers. The teaser showcases a unique version of the Xiaomi 15 smartphone featuring a MagSafe-like magnetic ring on its back. A custom camera module with a substantial sensor and a zoom lens can be attached using this ring.

Xiaomi’s design allows the external camera lens to seamlessly integrate with the smartphone’s hardware, as the company states. This integration enables users to edit and share images taken with this external lens just as easily as those captured with native lenses. It utilizes the company’s LaserLink technology, which facilitates nearly instantaneous data transfer.

The Xiaomi Modular Optical System features a 100-megapixel Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) sensor paired with a 35mm all-aspherical glass lens with a large aperture, promising excellent low-light performance.

The Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra are set to launch in India on March 11 at 12pm IST. Both devices are equipped with Snapdragon 8 Elite chipsets and feature Leica-branded cameras. They will be shipped with Android 15-based HyperOS 2 and support 90W wired and up to 80W wireless fast charging.

Xiaomi also launched the Xiaomi 15 Ultra Photography Kit Legend Edition at MWC 2025, which includes a USB Type-C camera grip and a detachable shutter button.
