Sophie Luff named as Somerset Women’s first professional captain

Sophie Luff has been appointed as Somerset Women’s first professional captain for the new Women’s County competition. At 31, she is a seasoned player with 74 List A matches, scoring 2,330 runs at an average of 43.14, and has captained the team from 2017 to 2022. Luff has also been a key player for Western Storm, becoming the first to make 100 appearances and contributing significantly to their T20 and List A successes. She expressed pride in leading her home club and emphasized the importance of setting standards for Somerset Women’s cricket. Coaches praised her leadership, experience, and dedication.

Sophie Luff has been appointed as the inaugural professional captain for Somerset Women’s team, marking the start of the new Women’s County competition.

Luff, aged 31, began her journey with Somerset’s junior teams before debuting with the senior women’s squad in 2009. Over her career, she has played in 74 List A matches for the club, amassing 2330 runs at an impressive average of 43.14, with a personal best of 138 not out. Additionally, she has participated in 68 T20 matches, scoring 1675 runs at an average of 35.63.

From 2017 to 2022, she served as captain of the county side and consistently contributed to the Taunton-based Western Storm, being named captain in 2020.

Luff was the first player to reach 100 appearances for Storm, during which she accumulated over 1760 runs in List A cricket, at an average of 50.54 and a top score of 157 not out. Her T20 statistics for Strom include scoring 850 runs at an average of 25.90, with a highest score of 78.

As a former England Academy, Development, and Under-19 international, she has also represented Welsh Fire, London Spirit, and Southern Brave in The Hundred.
