The most significant award night of the year is upon us. The 97th Academy Awards is currently taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. This year, Conan O’Brien is making his debut as the host of the Academy Awards. Jacques Audiard’s bold musical about a ruthless Mexican drug lord who transitions to life as a woman is leading the pack with 13 nominations.
The film The Brutalist has secured 10 nominations, including categories such as Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Wicked is also in the running with ten nominations. Bob Dylan’s biopic A Complete Unknown and Conclave are in competition with 8 nominations each.
The only Indian entry that made it to the Oscars shortlist is Anuja, nominated for Best Live Action Short Film.
Anuja, produced by industry powerhouses such as Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Guneet Monga Kapoor, and Mindy Kaling, tells a heartfelt story of a nine-year-old girl and her sister Palak. The short film illustrates how the young girls navigate challenging circumstances that life throws their way.
This marks Guneet Monga’s third Oscar nomination. Previously, her backing through Sikhya Entertainment led to Period. End of Sentence winning the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2019.
In 2023, Guneet Monga made history once again, as her Netflix Documentary Short, The Elephant Whisperers, took home the award for Best Documentary Short at the 95th Academy Awards.
This year’s Oscars will feature a remarkable lineup of presenters. Dave Bautista, Harrison Ford, Gal Gadot, Andrew Garfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Margaret Qualley, Alba Rohrwacher, Zoe Saldana, and Rachel Zegler are among the stars set to grace the stage.
They will join previously announced presenters, including Selena Gomez, Oprah Winfrey, Joe Alwyn, Ana de Armas, Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson, Bowen Yang, Lily-Rose Depp, and Sterling K. Brown.
Last year’s acting winners—Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph—will also be present to present awards.
