Honor Magic series to receive seven years of updates

Honor has announced that all Honor Magic devices will receive seven years of major Android updates and security updates. This commitment positions Honor among the top three global brands for software support, following Qualcomm’s recent announcement of eight years for its Snapdragon chipsets. While it’s unclear if this means seven major updates, users can expect at least six. This initiative is part of Honor’s “Alpha Plan,” which emphasizes user-centric AI and sustainability, aiming to reduce e-waste by encouraging longer device use. Honor is aligning its strategy with the EU’s Circular Economy and Ecodesign Regulation to enhance device lifecycle management.

Following Qualcomm’s recent announcement of extended software support for its latest Snapdragon 8 and 7 series chipsets for up to eight years, Honor has revealed an expansion of its own support window.

Effective immediately, all Honor Magic devices will receive seven years of major Android updates along with security updates. While it’s not clear if this specifically implies seven major Android updates for each device—since Honor’s statement simply mentions “seven years of major Android OS updates”—it guarantees at least six major updates, which is quite impressive.

Honor claims that this commitment places it “among the top three global brands worldwide to provide such comprehensive support.” This announcement is part of Honor’s “Alpha Plan,” a new strategic initiative that “centers on human-centric AI designed to enhance lives.”

With this extended support window, users of the Magic series will “have access to cutting-edge AI features and innovative functionalities for years to come,” “far exceeding the industry standard of 3-5 years.”

Not surprisingly, Honor is also framing this as a sustainability initiative—the longer support period is intended to decrease e-waste as consumers are encouraged to retain devices for an extended duration. Honor asserts it is “taking a global leadership role in device lifecycle management, aligning with the EU’s Circular Economy and Ecodesign Regulation.”
