BJP leader Prahlad Patel stirred controversy by calling public demand petitions “begging” during a statue unveiling in Madhya Pradesh. He criticized citizens for relying on government assistance, arguing it weakens society and dishonors martyrs. Patel emphasized the importance of a mindset focused on giving rather than asking. His comments prompted backlash from the opposition, particularly Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jeetu Patwari, who labeled Patel’s remarks an insult to the public. Patwari accused the BJP of arrogance and hypocrisy, asserting that their promises before elections are often unfulfilled, leading to disillusionment among voters.
Bhopal:
Former Union Minister and BJP figure Prahlad Patel stirred up controversy on Saturday when he referred to public demand petitions as “begging.” His comments, made during the unveiling ceremony of the statue of Veerangana Rani Avantibai Lodhi in Rajgarh district, Madhya Pradesh, have sparked significant backlash from the opposition.
While addressing the audience, the Madhya Pradesh Panchayat and Rural Development Minister stated, “People have adopted a habit of begging from the government. Leaders arrive, and they are presented with a basket full of petitions. They are adorned with garlands on stage, and a letter is handed to them. This isn’t a positive practice. Rather than asking, nurture the attitude of giving. I assure you, this will result in a more fulfilling life and contribute to a cultured society.”
He went on to assert that an overreliance on freebies diminishes society rather than fortifying it. “This group of beggars is not strengthening our society; it is weakening it. The allure of free handouts does not convey respect for courageous women. A martyr is genuinely honored only when we embody their values,” he remarked.
“Can you name a martyr who has ever begged? If so, please let me know. Yet, we continue to hold programs, deliver speeches, and then move on,” Mr. Patel continued. “As a Narmada Parikrama pilgrim, I do solicit alms – but never for myself. No one can claim they have given anything to Prahlad Patel.”
Mr. Patel’s remarks have prompted a strong reaction from the opposition Congress party. Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jeetu Patwari criticized the minister, labeling his comments as an affront to the people of the state.
“The arrogance of the BJP has escalated to the point where they now refer to the public as beggars! This is a disrespect to the hopes and tears of those facing difficulties. They make empty promises during elections and then refuse to deliver. When the populace reminds them, they shamelessly label them as beggars! They should keep in mind that soon, these very BJP leaders will come seeking votes!” Mr. Patwari declared in a pointed response.
