Shrek 5’s Initial Trailer Provokes Fan Discontent Due to “Unpleasant” Animation Style

DreamWorks has released the first 27-second trailer for the fifth installment of the Shrek animated film series, featuring Mike Myers as Shrek and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, with Zendaya voicing their daughter, Felicia. The trailer showcases a scene with Shrek and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) gazing into a magic mirror. However, many fans have criticized the new animation style, describing it as “off-putting” and reminiscent of “ugly sonic.” The film employs a new animation engine called MoonRay, previously used in “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” The Shrek franchise began in 2001, grossing over $492 million.

Dreamworks has unveiled the first trailer for the fifth installment of their animated film series, Shrek, but a segment of fans are not satisfied. The 27-second trailer, released on Thursday, features Mike Myers reprising his role as the ogre, alongside Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), with Zendaya lending her voice to the couple’s daughter, Felicia.

The clip showcases Shrek and his sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy) gazing into a magic mirror, inquiring: “Who’s the fairest of them all?” to which the mirror responds: “Shrek of course.” The trailer also includes a montage of the ogre pouting, dancing in a black leather bodysuit, and appearing shirtless with a well-defined chest in a TikTok-inspired style.

Social media reacts

As the clip gained popularity, users took to social media to express their displeasure with the “off-putting” animation redesign, with some saying it was a concern they had anticipated.

“I’m not a fan of the Shrek redesign/model, imho,” remarked one user, while another commented: “Please tell me I’m not the only one disturbed by the new Shrek and donkey design; they just put me off, ugly sonic type off-putting.”

A third user added: “I know times are different, but Jesus Christ, what is this?????”

I’m not a fan of the Shrek redesign/model imho

I appreciate the more cartoonish style they’re aiming for, but I was a huge fan of the old facial proportions being more “realistic” and unappealing.

Hoping it looks better in the final release because ooooooof pic.twitter.com/CxjXTHcom5

Notably, Dreamworks is employing a new animation engine known as MoonRay for the upcoming Shrek film. This engine was first used in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which premiered in 2022. Some fans believe that since the original movie debuted over two decades ago, the characters have aged, and the animation reflects this change.
