BJP MLA Neelam Pehalwan from Najafgarh proposed renaming the area to “Nahargarh” in the Delhi Assembly to honor King Nahar Singh. She argued that the name change would restore its original identity, which had been altered by Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. Pehalwan emphasized the historical significance of Raja Nahar Singh, who played a pivotal role during the 1857 revolution. She highlighted the oppression faced by the local community under Mughal rule and stated that renaming the area would hold great significance for its residents. Another proposal was submitted by MLA Anil Sharma to rename Mohammadpur in R K Puram to Madhavpur.
New Delhi:
BJP MLA Neelam Pehalwan, who represents Najafgarh, brought up the proposal to rename the locality to “Nahargarh” in the Delhi Assembly on Thursday.
In a statement to the media, Ms. Pehalwan expressed, “Today, I highlighted the matter of Najafgarh (in the House) suggesting that the name of Najafgarh be changed to ‘Nahargarh’… I am here to voice the concerns of the Najafgarh community, so it is my priority to advocate for the people.”
She elaborated that the initiative to rename Najafgarh aims to pay tribute to King Nahar Singh’s legacy, saying, “Today, I got the first chance to mention the need to rename Najafgarh after our king Nahar Singh in the House…”
Earlier in the Assembly, Neelam put forth a proposal to rename Najafgarh to ‘Nahargarh,’ asserting that Mughal ruler Aurangzeb had previously altered the name of the constituency and advocated for its original name to be restored.
Addressing the Delhi Assembly, BJP MLA Neelam Pehalwan remarked, “You are aware that my constituency is situated in the rural sections of Delhi, bordering three regions of Haryana. When Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II seized Najafgarh, there was significant oppression in the area.”
She recounted Raja Nahar Singh’s contributions during the 1857 revolution.
“During the revolt of 1857, Raja Nahar Singh played a crucial role in bringing the Najafgarh region into the Delhi domain,” stated Ms. Pehalwan.
“Despite numerous attempts, including efforts made by the then MP Parvesh Verma, we have sought to rename Najafgarh to ‘Nahargarh’. This change is vital because the people of Najafgarh have endured considerable oppression, and it carries deep significance for them. The kings of this area fought valiantly for their existence.”
In a related proposal, RK Puram MLA Anil Sharma also requested the renaming of Mohammadpur in the R K Puram constituency to Madhavpur during today’s Assembly session.
