Prayagraj:
The Uttar Pradesh Police announced on Wednesday that it has filed cases against two social media accounts for allegedly sharing and selling objectionable videos of women pilgrims during their bathing at the Maha Kumbh.
This action was taken following the instructions of Uttar Pradesh police chief Prashant Kumar as part of an ongoing initiative aimed at combating misleading and offensive social media content related to the religious event.
The social media monitoring unit discovered that certain platforms were posting videos showing women bathing and changing clothes at the Kumbh, violating their privacy and dignity, according to a police statement. Consequently, cases were registered at the Kotwali Kumbh Mela police station, and legal proceedings are underway, the police reported.
On February 17, a case was filed against an Instagram account for allegedly distributing inappropriate videos of women pilgrims.
The police stated that they have reached out to Meta, the parent company of Instagram, to help identify the account’s operator, and appropriate actions, including arrest, will be taken once the information is obtained.
In a second case, registered on February 19, a Telegram channel was found attempting to sell similar videos. Legal actions against the channel have commenced, and further investigations are ongoing, the statement detailed.
The police reiterated their dedication to enforcing strict measures against anyone misusing social media to disseminate objectionable content or misinformation concerning the Maha Kumbh.
