Wilson narrowly missed selection for Australia’s squad, with Nicole Faltum chosen as backup wicketkeeper due to Alyssa Healy’s unavailability. While Faltum is unlikely to play, her selection suggests a focus on the team’s future. Wilson excelled in the WNCL this summer, scoring 667 runs and leading New South Wales to the final against Queensland. Reflecting on her omission, Wilson remains optimistic about her prospects, noting the tight competition and Faltum’s form. Both Wilson and Faltum, aged 25, along with 23-year-old Maddy Darke, are seen as future contenders as the team transitions beyond Healy and Beth Mooney.
Although Faltum is not anticipated to play, as Beth Mooney will don the gloves, this selection clearly indicates a focus on future preparations for life after Healy and eventually Mooney.
Selectors acknowledged on Wednesday that it had been a close competition, with Wilson and West Australian wicketkeeper Maddy Darke both unlucky to be left out.
Her recent scores of 112 not out and 142 have propelled New South Wales to Sunday’s final against Queensland, where they aim to secure their first title in six years.
Wilson mentioned that she hadn’t received any communication from chief selector Shawn Flegler regarding the decision but remains optimistic about her long-term opportunities.
“I haven’t actually heard anything about that, but I’m sure I will try to get in contact over the next few weeks to see what’s happening,” Wilson stated. “A few months back, I spoke with Shawn Flegler regarding my role and his vision for my future.”
“It’s all looking positive. I definitely think the competition was tight, and Nic just edged me out this time. Each time something like this comes up, you naturally want to be the one chosen, but I believe Nic has also had a strong season.”
When discussing Faltum’s selection on Wednesday, Flegler highlighted her T20 performances in the WBBL, wicketkeeping skills, and contributions to Australia A. Faltum has also recorded scores of 90, 82, and 52 in recent weeks for Victoria in the WNCL, being recognized as one of the promising players in line for selection.
With both Faltum and Wilson aged 25, and Darke at 23, it’s an opportune moment for the trio to assert their claims as Healy is now 34 and Mooney 31.
“I remember chatting with Alyssa Healy, probably last year,” Wilson recalled. “She mentioned, ‘you know what, you’re at the perfect age because I’m a bit older than you’. She advised me to keep working hard, and I’ll likely find my opportunity at the right time.”
“It’s exciting to be scoring runs now, which probably keeps me on their radar … hopefully, one day, I’ll get my chance.”
