Bengaluru Tech Expert Relocates to London, Compares India and UK Cultures

Many Indians have moved abroad for better career opportunities, with popular destinations including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Singapore. Arnav Gupta, a tech professional who relocated from Bengaluru to London, shared insights on the differences between the tech industries in India and the UK. He noted that tech jobs in the UK do not offer disproportionately high salaries compared to other professions, unlike in India. Gupta emphasized that passion for work in the UK is notably higher, as professionals focus on the craft rather than just financial gain. He acknowledged India’s advantages, particularly the presence of large teams from Big Tech companies.

A significant number of Indians have opted to move abroad, lured by the potential for enhanced career prospects and greater financial security. Popular destinations such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Singapore provide a refuge for Indians in pursuit of professional advancement and economic prosperity. Recently, Arnav Gupta, a technology expert who transitioned from Bengaluru to London six months prior, shared his insights on the contrasts between the tech sectors in India and the UK.

In a discussion on X, Mr. Gupta disclosed that he relocated to the UK on a Global Talent Visa, allowing him to explore opportunities within tech startups. He notably remarked that, unlike India, tech positions in the UK do not provide disproportionately higher salaries compared to other fields.

“The most significant ‘vibe shift’ for me was witnessing the average level of enthusiasm for the ‘work’ (not just the job or the product, but the work itself – and I apologize if that distinction is lost on you) is remarkably high, especially when compared to my experiences in India,” he explained.

It has been over 6 months since I moved my primary residence from Bangalore to London (Bangalore has now taken the place of Delhi as my second home).

For most of the latter part of last year, I was engaging with numerous tech/product startups here, trying to understand the ecosystem.

He further indicated that those pursuing high salaries in the UK often choose finance roles instead. While tech roles in the UK are lucrative, Mr. Gupta underscored that they do not match the financial rewards seen in India. Furthermore, he pointed out the considerable salary differences within the same industry in India, where top-tier salaries can reach 10-20 times more than entry-level pay.

According to Mr. Gupta, a key advantage of the UK tech sector is that professionals are typically more passionate and engaged with their work, as their motivations extend beyond financial rewards. “Because generally, many more individuals are passionate about their craft, they tend to debate more about the process, the quality, and the architecture – they genuinely care about ‘how’ things are achieved, rather than merely completing tasks on time,” he observed.

Nevertheless, he also emphasized that India possesses its own unique advantages for tech professionals, featuring an ecosystem with distinct benefits. The techie noted that numerous Big Tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, have significantly larger teams in India than in other regions, underscoring the country’s pivotal role in the global tech landscape.
