Guwahati:

A spectacular Jhumoir dance performance with nearly 9,000 dancers and drummers greeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon his arrival in Assam for the start of his two-day visit today. This event, organized by the Himanta Biswa Sarma government, commemorates 200 years of Assam’s tea industry and pays tribute to the rich cultural heritage of the tea tribes.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar along with heads of missions from 60 countries were present at the Jhumoir Binandini programme, which showcased the vibrant traditions of the northeastern state to an international audience.

PM Modi emphasized Assam’s profound connection with tea, recalling his own history as a seller of the drink.

“Who understands the aroma and quality of tea better than a chaiwallah?” PM Modi remarked.

He stated that the northeast has its best brand ambassador.

“Today, over 60 ambassadors from various nations will experience Assam. They will take the essence of tea back with them,” PM Modi added.

Following the Jhumoir performance, a laser show centered on a distinct cultural theme of the state was presented.

Later, PM Modi inaugurated two galleries for the ‘Advantage Assam 2.0 Infrastructure and Investment Summit’ in Guwahati’s Khanapara.

The galleries feature displays highlighting the traditional industries of the state, aptly named ‘Pride of Assam’, alongside representations of modern industries and infrastructure development, titled ‘Future of Assam’, according to Mr. Sarma.

“Assam is alive with energy today. This entire stadium resonates with enthusiasm. Your performance embodies the fragrance and charm of the tea gardens. No one understands the allure and aroma of tea better than a chaiwallah,” PM Modi asserted.

“… When so many participated in the Jhumoir, it will stand as a record of its own. Last time I visited Assam in 2023, over 11,000 people performed the Bihu dance, setting a world record,” PM Modi noted.

He mentioned that his administration is developing “adivasi museums” throughout the country, alongside efforts to raise the wages of tea garden workers, predominantly women.

“Currently, 1.50 lakh pregnant women working in tea gardens are receiving financial support. The Assam government is establishing 350 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs,” he continued.

Earlier, the Assam Chief Minister stated that PM Modi’s visit would convey a message to industrialists about the state’s newfound peace.

He articulated that while the state possesses great potential, law and order issues had hindered its progress over the last three to four decades.

“At the time of Independence, Assam boasted a GDP higher than the national average, but various historical events have significantly impeded the state’s development since then. This is a pivotal moment for a major turnaround and a fresh journey… I believe we are on the right path,” he concluded.
