BJP Announces Upcoming ‘Guided Tour’ of ‘Sheeshmahal’ Amidst Controversy Surrounding Renovations

The BJP plans to take reporters on a “guided tour” of ‘Sheeshmahal,’ the luxurious bungalow in Delhi where AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal resided as Chief Minister. This move follows the BJP’s victory in recent elections and aims to expose alleged misuse of taxpayer funds by showcasing extravagant renovations costing Rs 33 crore. BJP leaders accused Kejriwal’s administration of hypocrisy, claiming it contradicted his ‘aam aadmi’ image. The term ‘Sheeshmahal’ has become a symbol of corruption allegations against AAP. With AAP now in opposition, the future use of the bungalow remains undecided as they seek accountability for its lavish upgrades.
New Delhi:

The BJP is set to conduct a “guided tour” for reporters of ‘Sheeshmahal’ – the residence in Delhi where Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal stayed during his tenure as chief minister – shortly after the party regained control in the national capital. The Flagstaff Road bungalow in Civil Lines faced criticism prior to the February elections due to its extravagant renovations, with the BJP challenging Mr. Kejriwal’s portrayal as an ‘aam aadmi‘ (common man).

Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma, who triumphed over Mr. Kejriwal in the recent elections, informed reporters today that he would showcase the bungalow to reveal how the previous AAP administration utilized taxpayers’ funds to support the chief minister’s luxurious lifestyle.

The term ‘Sheeshmahal’, a phrase in colloquial Hindi signifying a lavish residence, was introduced by the BJP last year. It quickly became their most powerful tool in launching corruption allegations against the AAP leader, who entered politics a decade ago as an anti-corruption advocate.

Renovations of the bungalow incurred an astounding cost of Rs 33 crore, with the BJP asserting that the AAP added opulent features such as a jacuzzi. The BJP has also released images of the makeover.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva claimed that four government properties were merged to create a grand complex covering 50,000 sq metres. He has contacted Lt Governor VK Saxena to request the annulment of this merger.

Mr. Kejriwal resided in this bungalow during his time as Chief Minister from 2015 to 2024. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, representing the BJP, has chosen not to occupy the residence, and a decision regarding its future use is still pending.
