Rekha Gupta, the newly elected Chief Minister of Delhi, made history by defeating AAP’s Bandna Kumari by over 29,000 votes in the February 5 Assembly polls. This marks her successful third attempt, having lost in 2015 and 2020. Her victory symbolizes the BJP’s dedication to women’s empowerment, as highlighted by Parvesh Verma. Gupta, 50, was celebrated by her family, with her mother-in-law expressing pride in both her political achievements and household skills. Gupta has since claimed the mandate to form the government and is welcomed with enthusiasm from supporters, including her husband, who expressed excitement for the celebration.
“Chamkega naam Rekha Gupta. Chamkegii Dilli (The name Rekha Gupta will shine. Delhi will shine),” expressed the mother-in-law of Delhi’s newly elected Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, achieved victory over AAP candidate Bandna Kumari by a margin of over 29,000 votes in the Assembly elections held on February 5. It is noteworthy that Ms. Gupta had previously contested the Shalimar Bagh seat during the 2015 and 2020 Delhi elections but was defeated by AAP’s Bandana Kumari in both instances.
Parvesh Verma, a leading contender for the Delhi post, extended his congratulations to Ms. Gupta, describing her election as a testament to the BJP’s dedication to “nari shakti”.
“For BJP, Nari Shaktikaran is not merely a slogan; it is a pledge to advance women’s empowerment. The election of a woman as Chief Minister in Delhi is evidence of Modi ji’s commitment to uplifting Nari Shakti,” stated Mr. Verma, who triumphed over Arvind Kejriwal in the polls.
Ms. Gupta, aged 50, who was chosen as the leader by the party’s newly elected MLAs on Wednesday, met with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to claim her right to form a government in the national capital.
“Pehle saraa mahaul dekho, baraat Ka mahaul hai. Shaadi ke mahaul se bhi badhia lag raha hai (Look around, see for yourself. The mood resembles that of a wedding procession. It feels even better than a wedding atmosphere),” her mother-in-law remarked.
“Khushi ka mahaul hai. Sab kood rahe hain, nach rahe hain (The atmosphere is joyful. Everyone is jumping and dancing),” she added.
The mother-in-law also emphasized that Ms. Gupta was skilled in household duties.
“Woh ghar ka bhi kaam karti thi. Ghar se koi shikayat nahi hai (She also used to handle household chores. There are no complaints at home),” she asserted.
Manish Gupta, Rekha Gupta’s husband, shared in the excitement as he received congratulations from a jubilant crowd gathered outside their home.
“Bahut Khush hai, bahut excited hain. Modiji ki jai jaikar ho rahi hai. BJP ki jai jaikar ho rahi hai. Sab wahi celebrate karne ki liye ekatha hue hai. Rekha ji ka intezaar kar rahe hain (We are very happy and excited. Modiji is being celebrated. BJP is being praised. Everyone has come together to celebrate. We are waiting for Rekha ji),” Mr. Gupta conveyed to NDTV.
