As the 2025 WNBA Draft approaches, some teams are already considering strategies for 2026, particularly around the potential draft eligibility of JuJu Watkins. Current rules require college players to graduate or be 22 before declaring, which could delay Watkins’s debut until 2027 unless changes are made. During a recent interview, Watkins expressed her views on draft eligibility, advocating for options that would allow earlier entry. Teams like the Golden State Valkyries, Connecticut Sun, and Dallas Wings may benefit from “tanking” in 2025 to secure Watkins as a likely top draft pick if eligibility rules change.
The 2025 WNBA Draft is still on the horizon, yet several teams are already focusing on strategies for 2026 — primarily due to the possibility that JuJu Watkins *might* be eligible for the draft next year.
Much will hinge on the new CBA set by the league. Currently, college athletes cannot declare for the WNBA Draft until they graduate or turn 22, meaning under existing rules, Watkins (along with others) would have to wait until 2027 for her professional entry… unless alterations are made (please, WNBPA, make those adjustments).
JuJu believes WNBA Draft eligibility should be revised
In December, Watkins and her coach Lindsay Gottlieb guest-starred on Good Game with Sarah Spain where they discussed potential amendments to the eligibility criteria.
“I want to say that I am really enjoying my experience, Coach [Gottlieb],” Watkins stated diplomatically.
“I truly believe we should have the option,” she continued. “There has been remarkable growth in college basketball that begs the question, why would you want to leave? You can have that experience and enhance your brand while in college. I would definitely say we should have the option, but I also think college serves as a way to prepare us for the pros. So, I’m conflicted. It’s a sensitive issue, but I’m supportive of it.”
Which WNBA teams should consider tanking for Watkins in 2026
Assuming the revised CBA permits college players to declare for the Draft before completing their education or reaching 21 — these WNBA teams should definitely contemplate tanking in 2025 to secure Watkins, anticipated to be the No. 1 draft pick when she becomes eligible, next year.
Golden State Valkyries
Historically, expansion teams tend to struggle in their inaugural seasons, which could work in the Valkyries’ favor, especially if JuJu becomes a prospect next year.
Connecticut Sun
The Sun has had a challenging free agency period (with their entire starting five moving on this year), making it difficult to envision a repeat of last season’s success. Perhaps the most prudent strategy is to endure and grab wins where possible while aiming for next year’s top draft selection.
Dallas Wings
The Wings are set to integrate Paige Bueckers into their lineup this season, but they’ve lost some crucial players already in 2025, indicating that this year may be a transitional period. Perhaps they should aim for a complete renewal into 2026, where they can achieve more.
